New York Times Bestseller

I want to make the New York Times Bestseller’s List.

Before I turn 30. (I’m 24 right now).

It’ll be incredibly hard. I might have a few things going against me. It’s no secret that the NYT Bestselling list has always been dominated by older, Caucasian authors. Big names, mostly, who’ve been playing the field for sometimes decades. Once in a while, self-published and indie authors will hit it big and stay on the list for weeks, even months. But something I’ve been noticing lately is the lack of Asian authors on the list.

Don’t get me wrong, all my favorite authors are Caucasian. Nora Roberts, J.K. Rowling, Lauren Blakely, Karina Halle, John Grisham, Dan Brown, Michael Crichton just to name a few. But I’ve been thinking a lot lately, why haven’t I really heard of any Asian-Canadian NYT bestselling authors? I mean I know there’s Amy Tan and Celeste Ng but why aren’t there more? Way more?

It’s upsetting. I’m upset.

Here I am trying to make that list (in the next few years) and suddenly feeling overwhelmed by how impossible it seems. I mean it’s hard enough for a regular self-published author…but for a self-published, twenty-something, female, Asian, Canadian author…?!

Is it even possible?

I’ll sure as hell try my level best. I’ll bust my ass for years if need be. I want to prove to myself and the world that it’s possible. Really, really hard, but possible.

If I succeed, I might be the youngest self-published female Chinese-Canadian author to ever hit that list. That’s something I’ll be damn proud of.

If I fail…well, at least I shot for the moon and landed in the stars.

How do I plan to accomplish this ginormous feat? Well, for starters, I’m going to be writing. A LOT MORE. It’s a bit tough with a toddler running around and a part-time job but I’ll make it work somehow. Also, I really need to up my marketing game and network more. Need to get my name out there and make some more author friends. More updates to come.

Anyway, that’s my tidbit for today.
